How to Ruin a Toast
I was about to turn and duck out the door before the dean could notice, but before I had the chance, I saw Brady coming out of the kitchen and into the living room. Barely registering that he looked good in a crisp white button-down and black slacks, I quickly sidestepped into the hallway before he could see me. I cursed inside my head, looking around for an alternative escape route but I was on the opposite side of the house to the side door. There was, however, an open door in front of me that I remembered was the bathroom. Giving myself a minute to calm down and think of my next steps sounded like a grand idea, so I ducked inside, closing and locking the door behind me.
“Okay, now what?” I whispered to myself as I looked around the bathroom. A high window caught my eye but I didn’t need to be a geometry whiz to know my body would not fit through it. I looked in the mirror, realizing in horror that I was definitely not party-ready. When I’d left the dorm, I was just going to look. I mean, hang out with the horses.
Ha ha, Brooklyn. Let’s see you get out of this one.
I pushed away my panicked thoughts and tried to think rationally. The plan was to get out as stealthily as I could, but failing that, I couldn’t go out into the party in a hoodie, with my hair in a messy ponytail and not a drop of makeup on. I started with taking off the hoodie. It was a Rosewood one and I liked it, but it had a big grease stain on the front and I was willing to sacrifice it. I stuffed it in the cabinet under the sink, figuring I’d be long gone before it got discovered.
Then, while begging the universe for forgiveness (because I wasn’t exactly going to bring what I was doing to the homeowner’s attention), I started snooping in drawers and found a veritable Sephora store in the second one down. Jackpot. I put thoughts of conjunctivitis out of my head and used some of the dean’s eyeliner and mascara, just enough to make myself look human and not like a washed out zombie.
I used a Q-tip to mix a bit of her lipstick with Vaseline into a tinted gloss and swiped a little on, just for a touch of shiny color. “Not bad,” I said to my reflection as I tucked everything neatly back in the drawer, finger-combed my hair out and left the bathroom before anyone might get suspicious about what I was doing in there.
I came out into the hallway and made my way toward the door, but there were people standing in front of it. I was about to ease past them when the lights flickered. The people in front of the
